Multiple-site optical recording of membrane potential from a salivary gland. Interaction of synaptic and electrotonic excitation.

Abstract: The interaction between synaptic and electrotonic excitation of cells from the salivary gland of the snail Helisoma trivolvis was studied using a voltage-sensitive merocyanine dye. Linear and square photodiode matrix arrays were used to record simultaneously the response to neuronal stimulation of 15-25 separate regions of the gland . Laterally opposed acini exhibited highly synchronous electrical activity, which suggested a correspondingly high degree of electrical coupling. In the longitudinal direction, cou… Show more

“…The rise time of the light measuring system (10-90%) was 1.1 ms. This data acquisition system for MSORTV is similar to that described by Grinvald et al (1981) and used in a variety of experiments since (e.g., Senseman et al, 1983;Salzberg et al, 1983Salzberg et al, , 1985Konnerth et al, 1987;Obaid et al, , 1989Parsons et al, 1991Parsons et al, , 1992Salzberg, 1990, 1992).…”

“…Furthermore, optic'al methods that employ a square photodiode array have been developed and they provide a powerful tool for simultaneous recording of electrical activity from multiple areas of various central nervous systems (Grinvald, Cohen, Lesher & Boyle, 1981; Salzberg, Obaid, Senseman & Gainer, 1983;Orbach & Cohen, 1983;Grinvald, Anglister, Freeman, Hildesheim & Manker, 1984; Orbach, Cohen & Grinvald, 1985; London, Zecevic & Cohen, 1987;Kauer, Sensemani & Cohen, 1987; ; also for a review of the method see Cohen & Lesher, 1986), the salivary gland (Senseman, Shimizu, Horwitz & Salzberg, 1983) and the adult heart (Komuro, Sakai, Hirota & Kamino, 1986;Salama, Lombardi & Elson, 1987).…”
