Multiple transcatheter interventions in the same session in congenital cardiopathies

Abstract: Background:To investigate the methods of percutaneous transcatheter interventions for combined congenital heart disease and to evaluate its efficacy in children.Materials and Methods:Thirty cases (ages 3 days-13.5 years, body weight 3-35 kg) that underwent two multiple transcatheter interventions for combined or solitary congenital heart disease were retrospectively analyzed and presented. Results:A total of 61 transcatheter interventions were performed in 30 patients as combined procedures. In 29 patients, two… Show more

“…[5,6,7,24] Combined cardiac intervention with ostium secundum atrial septal defect closure and correction of the associated anomaly was done in 25 (30.1%) patients; balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty was the commonest combined intervention done, as has been reported in other studies. [25,26] Balloon coarctoplasty and balloon aortic valvuloplasty along with ostium secundum atrial septal defect closure were done in two patients. This combination of intervention in the same sitting has not been reported earlier in literature.…”

“…For that reason, the possibility to perform a combined procedure in the same session would naturally be higher in patients undergoing a transcatheter ASD closure in the pediatric age group 15). There were no patients undergoing a combined procedure during the same session in the group of adults while a total of 9 patients in Group 1 underwent transcatheter PDA closure or PBV procedure in the same session.…”

“…There is a limited number of case series with hemodynamically significant coarctation that was treated with the E178 transcatheter approach in the literature [Celermajer 2002;Uddin 2000;de Bono 2005;Roos-Hesselink 2003]. Multiple transcatheter interventions in the same session for treatment of PDA in combination with CoA have been reported by Turkay et al [Turkay 2010]. Simultaneous treatment of native coarctation of the aorta combined with patent ductus arteriosus using a covered stent [Sadiq 2003], and stent implantation for aortoplasty and closure of patent ductus arteriosus using the Amplatzer duct occluder [Hakim 1999] have been described.…”
