Multiplicities of charged pions and kaons from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering by the proton and the deuteron

Abstract: Multiplicities in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering are presented for each charge state of pi(+/-) and K-+/- mesons. The data were collected by the HERMES experiment at the HERA storage ring using 27.6 GeV electron and positron beams incident on a hydrogen or deuterium gas target. The results are presented as a function of the kinematic quantities x(B), Q(2), z, and P-h perpendicular to. They represent a unique data set for identified hadrons that will significantly enhance our understanding of the frag… Show more

“…HERMES has finalized the extraction of multiplicities for each charged state of π AE and K AE [8]. In the extraction, the correction for acceptance, kinematic smearing, losses due to decay in flight and secondary strong interactions, and radiative effects is accomplished by means of a smearing matrix which is generated with a Monte Carlo simulation.…”

“…Instead, it turns out that, for SIDIS processes like those measured by COMPASS [13] and HERMES [14] Collaborations, where Q is only a few GeV's, the modeled non-perturbative contributions dominate over the entire range of measured q T 's. Therefore any resummation scheme would be inadequate in this case, and hardly applicable.…”
