Multiscale Pedestrian Dynamics and Infection Spread Model for Policy Analysis

Abstract: In this paper, we present a formulation for a multiscale model combining a social force based pedestrian movement including collision avoidance and a stochastic infection dynamics framework to evaluate the spread of multiple infectious diseases during air travel. We apply the multiscale model to evaluate pedestrian movement strategies that can reduce infection spread during air travel. The results are presented for airport lounge and airplane boarding and deplaning. Use of parallel computing to evaluate the va… Show more

“…Yang et al estimated demand on diesel fuel (which is needed for emergency power generation) at the county level based on weather data (e.g., wind speed) and power outage data (23). A group of researchers from Florida predicted fuel shortages and identified an intervention strategy by using real-time traffic information and fuel availability data from GasBuddy (an online crowd-sourcing database providing real-time gas station information) (2,24). Overall, human behavior and the associated demographic characteristics have not been featured in understanding fuel access needs.…”

“…In prior related work [20,[23][24][25][26][27], we developed a particle dynamics pedestrian movement model that tracks the movement of individual passengers in airplanes, airports, and combined it with stochastic infection dynamics. In Liu and Namilae et al (2018) [22], human panic behaviours were considered, and several simulations models were developed based on review of previous studies, using social forces models and agent-based models.…”

“…These rules are often based on mutual distances. For example, virtual persons close to an infectious one become infected after a certain time (see [8][9][10][11][12]). Ronchi and Lovreglio [13] expand the concept of proximity to further contact types, e. g. physical contact, proximity within a certain radius and occupancy of the same room or building.…”
