Multislice Computed Tomographic Findings in Symptomatic Patients After Amplatzer Septal Occluder Device Implantation

Abstract: Cardiac symptoms after ASO implant deserve thorough investigation. MSCT is feasible in the assessment of such patients and offers a unique assessment of the device to surrounding anatomic structures and should be considered as a useful adjunct to echocardiography in symptomatic patients.

“…3 Although excellent results have been reported with various devices over the years, there have been rare instances of complications such as residual leaks, erosion, perforation, tamponade, distal migration, deformity of the device and thrombus formation. 1,[4][5][6] The estimated incidence of long-term adverse events in the USA alone with the atrial septal occluder is approximately 0.1%. 5 In a large review of 3,535 patients who underwent percutaneous ASD or PFO closure, 2.8% of patients had minor complications, whereas serious complications were reported in only 0.3% of patients.…”

“…Untreated defects can lead to congestive heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, paradoxical arterial embolism and stroke. 1 Transcatheter closure in patients with atrial septal defect (ASD) or patent foramen ovale (PFO) has become a safe and established alternative to surgery, with high closure rates and rare complications. Most complications are noted early, and late complications are very rare.…”

“…CT evaluation of atrial and venous anatomy in symptomatic patients after Amplatzer device occlusion of ASD has been reported. 183 The region of patch closure of a septal defect may become calcified with aging. Since these lesions are the most common congenital cardiac abnormalities, previously unrecognized septal defects may be first identified by cardiac CT in patients undergoing scanning for other indications.…”
