Multitiered Systems of Support, Adaptive Interventions, and SMART Designs

Abstract: This article introduces the special section on adaptive interventions and sequential multiple-assignment randomized trial (SMART) research designs. In addition to describing the two accompanying articles, we discuss features of adaptive interventions (AIs) and describe the use of SMART design to optimize AIs in the context of multitiered systems of support (MTSS) and integrated MTSS. AI is a treatment delivery model that explicitly specifies how information about individuals should be used to decide which trea… Show more

“…Adaptive interventions describe treatments that use an implementation protocol with explicit guidelines on when, for whom, how, and in what sequence a given treatment can be implemented most effectively. Adaptive interventions detail whether, how, when, and which measures to use in the process of tailoring an educational intervention based on information about an individual learner or subgroups of learners at specific time points (see also Roberts et al, 2021). Similarly, adaptive approaches to classroom L2 instruction are not new; what is new is much of the conceptual and methodological apparatus around systematically constructing and studying interventions in this way.…”

“…The ADI elements include the decision points, intervention options, and tailoring variables. It will also be necessary to decide the thresholds or levels of the tailoring variables that differentiate between conditions under which different ADI options should be delivered; this includes planning for situations in which information about the tailoring variable is not available in practice (see Murphy & McKay, 2004; Roberts et al, 2021). These decisions can be informed by existing literature and empirical evidence and by consideration of standard clinical practice, expert opinion, or experience.…”
