Multivariate analysis of ‘bacuri’ reproductive and vegetative morphology

Abstract: The objective of this study was to characterize sixteen genotypes of P. insignis available in the Embrapa Meio-Norte germplasm collection (Teresina, Piauí, Brazil) with respect to 33 morphological traits relating to leaves, flowers, branches, fruits and seeds. Phenotypic variance among genotypes was estimated using the Mahalanobis distance technique and the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean analysis (UPGMA). The method of Singh (1981) was used to determine which of the traits contributed most t… Show more

“…Each one is represented mainly by accessions collected in these states or nearby regions. Some efforts to characterize the conserved germplasm have been carried out by Carvalho et al (2002Carvalho et al ( , 2003Carvalho et al ( , 2004 and Souza et al (2016). The germplasm bank accessions of Piauí were molecularly characterized with inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers, identifying genetic differentiation among sampling localities in the states of Maranhão and Piauí (Souza et al 2013).…”

“…Caatinga vegetation includes several endemic species, such as Spondias tuberosa Arruda (Anacardiaceae), popularly known as umbu tree (Figs. 1a and 1b) (Souza 2000; Lins Neto et al 2010Neto et al , 2013Mitchell and Daly 2015). Its popular name is derived from the Tupi-Guarani indigenous word "ymb-u", which means "the tree that gives water" (Epstein 1998).…”

“…tuberosa is an andromonoecious species with gametophytic self-incompatibility (Leite and Machado 2010), pollinated mainly by bees and wasps (Nadia et al 2007; Almeida et al 2011). It is a predominantly allogamous species, with an estimated outcrossing rate of 74% (Souza 2000), and variation between 80.4% (multi-locus) and 84.1% (single locus) (Santos and Gama 2013). However, fruit production is low, considering the high number of owers produced (Fig.…”

“…Exploratory multivariate statistical techniques are usually applied in studies with genotype assessment, such as in cowpea (Santos et al, 2016) or in fruit-bearing species, as is the case of bacurizeiro (Souza et al, 2016). However, this technique has potential for seed quality assessment, a fact proven for soybean (Barbosa et al, 2013) and Brachiaria brizantha cv.…”
