Muon Measurements with IceTop

Abstract: We present the measurement of the density of GeV muons in near-vertical air showers by the IceTop array at the South Pole. The muon density is measured at 600 m and 800 m lateral distance from the shower axis in air showers between 1 PeV and 100 PeV. This result can be used to constrain hadronic interaction models by comparing it with the outcome of Monte Carlo simulations. We show that some models do not produce muon densities in agreement with this result unless an unphysical composition of the primary cosmi… Show more

“…IceTop has also been used in searches for PeV gamma rays [27,28], solar ground level enhancements [29], and solar flares [29]. Another analysis [30] includes single tank hits to identify the component of ∼GeV muons in large showers for studies of primary composition. Finally, IceTop also serves as a partial veto to reduce the background for astrophysical neutrinos [31].…”

“…The density of GeV muons in IceTop is reconstructed using the method of Refs. [14,15], which relies on the characteristic signal produced by a muon which passes vertically through a tank. Far from the shower axis, this can be used to statistically separate the muon signal from hits of other charged particles.…”

“…The GeV muon content of air showers was measured using data taken by IceTop between June 2010 and May 2013 [52]. The standard IceTop selection is applied [1] that is also used for the analysis of the cosmic ray spectrum (described in Section 2).…”

“…This semi-analytical model accounts for an electromagnetic component, a muonic component, and for uncorrelated background hits, as described in Ref. [52]. The electromagnetic component is described by a simple power law accounting for the threshold behavior of small signals.…”
