Muon signals of very lightCP-odd Higgs states of the NMSSM at the LHC

Abstract: We study here the µ + µ − decay mode of a very light CP-odd Higgs boson of the NMSSM, a 1 , produced in association with a bottom-antibottom pair and find that, despite small event rates, a significant signal should be extractable from the SM background at the LHC with high luminosity.

“…Besides, since tau decays are always accompanied by neutrinos, there is no sharp peak of a 0 1 invariant mass. For these reasons, as discussed in the literature, 4µ [39,44,45], 4γ [21,33] or 2γ + 2-jets [46] search channels with m a 0 1 < 2m τ turn out to be the ideal way to probe NMSSM Higgses with very light pseudoscalars.…”

“…Although these cascades are generally suppressed, a substantial enhancement can occur when particles are light and therefore induce distinctive signatures. 1 For example, if the lightest pseudoscalar, denoted as a 0 1 , has a mass m a 0 1 > ∼ 2m b , the process h 0 1 → 2a 0 1 → 2bb with 4b final states is dominant [22,[36][37][38][39][40]. This seems a good channel for collider study, 2 however, in hadron colliders like the LHC this signature is hidden by a huge QCD background.…”

“…Also, previous theoretical studies in the context of the NMSSM have investigated the potential for the LHC to probe light pseudoscalars with somewhat similar searches [83][84][85][86][87][88]. However, these investigations did not incorporate trigger and detector effects, and did not analyze the effects of cuts on the signal and backgrounds in detail, which is a major component of this work and crucial for obtaining an observable signal.…”
