Muscarine and Muscarine Isomers in Selected Inocybe Species

Abstract: Summary. The distribution and relative concentrations of muscarine and its isomers in I.nocybe species were determined. Notable was the finding that I . cinnamomea A . H . Smith, 1.geophyUa Karst. and I . Zacera (Fr.) QuSZ. contained concentrations of e$i-muscarine equal to or higher than muscarine itself. The reasons for a re-examination of the occurrence of muscarine in mushroom: were dicussed in papers No. 28 [2] and No. 29 [3] of this series. After the isolation of muscarine from Amanita muscaria (L. ex Fr… Show more

“…fibrillosibrunnea and I. marginata , but these samples contained only about half the concentration of muscarine as detected in I. scissa . Muscarine detection results from samples of I. subexilis (negative), I. leiocephala ( =  I. subbrunnea ) (positive), and I. grammata ( =  I. albodisca ) (negative) are consistent with earlier findings [5], [6], [11].…”

“…Little taxonomic correlation has been claimed with respect to the taxonomic distribution of muscarine-containing species of Inocybaceae [5], [6]. However, these prior studies lacked a robust phylogenetic perspective to test the hypothesis.…”

“…Eugster 65 has presented muscarine analyses for 31 species of fungi, some of which contain more than 1% (dry weight basis) of this compound. Catalfomo and Eugster 33 reported that muscarine isomers are predominant in some species of Inocybe, and sudorifica. Apparently the species most frequently involved is the Fly Agaric, Amanita muscaria, but there exist today very considerable differences of opinion as to whether or not this is truly a poisonous species.…”

“…It is a toxic alkaloid found in Amanita muscaria (fly agaric) and other fungi of the Inocybe and Clitocybe species (e.g., Inocybe geophylla, Clitocybe dealbata) Sweetman (2002), Hughes et al (1966), Catalfomo and Eugster (1970). Muscarine was the first parasympathomimetic substance ever studied and causes profound parasympathetic activation that may end in convulsions and death.…”
