Muscle Enzyme Adaptation in Patients with Peripheral Arterial Insufficiency: Spontaneous Adaptation, Effect of Different Treatments and Consequences on Walking Performance

Abstract: 1. The activities of phosphofructokinase (PFK), citrate synthetase (CS), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase (ACDH) and cytochrome-c oxidase(Cyt-ox) in the calf muscle tissue were compared in subjects with intermittent claudication (n = 38) and controls (n = 20). The activities of CS, ACDH and Cyt-ox were increased and the activity of Cytox was positively correlated to the maximal walking distance (MWD) in the patients. 2. Thirty-three patients with intermittent claudication were rando… Show more

“…NADH dehydrogenase=citrate synthase) between PAD and controls. While altered enzyme ratios might be indicative of cellular stress, interpretation of their functional significance is very difficult given that the absolute activities of these enzymes are normal 3,68 and that the enzyme ratios did not correlate significantly with peak VO 2 . 26 In mitochondrial myopathies, peak VO 2 is similar to that seen in PAD (i.e.…”

“…Bu değişiklikler yüksek rakımlı yerlerde yaşayan sağlıklı insanlarda veya kronik kalp yetersizliği, periferik arter hastalığı, kronik tıkayıcı akciğer hastalığı gibi hastalıkları olup kronik hipoksiye maruz kalanlarda karakteristik olarak görünür.
