Muscle mass loss is associated with physical dysfunction in patients with early rheumatoid arthritis

Abstract: BackgroundMuscle mass loss is common in long-standing rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The aim was to explore the prevalence and effects of RA disease characteristics in patients with early RA.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was carried out based on a Chinese RA cohort and control subjects. The body composition (BC) was assessed using bioelectric impedance analysis. Myopenia was defined by an appendicular skeletal muscle mass index of ≤ 7.0 kg/m2 in men and ≤ 5.7 kg/m2 in women. Physical dysfunction was defined as… Show more

“…As previously noted in this review, various interleukins participate in the pathogenesis of RA, such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, among others [ 28 ], as RA is a disease in which many of its comorbidities are associated with metabolic problems or muscle wasting, which contribute to functional disability and a worse disease prognosis [ 33 , 34 , 35 ]. Therefore, several authors have been interested in studying molecules that simultaneously affect all these factors.…”

“…Among the multiple extra-articular manifestations in RA, muscle wasting and rheumatoid cachexia are some of the severe problems that affect patients [ 33 ]. Muscle wasting is characterized by a progressive loss of muscle mass and changes in the composition of the skeletal muscle fibers, resulting in decreased strength and function disability [ 34 ]. In rheumatoid cachexia, this process of muscle wasting can be accompanied with an increase in or conservation of fat mass and, mainly, with an increase in muscle inflammatory biomarkers [ 35 ].…”
