Muscle Strength Recovery in Treated Guillain-Barré Syndrome

Abstract: Until 18 months of recovery, dynamometric measures still showed significant strength improvement. This underscores the need for a minimal 24 months of clinical follow-up with an individualized rehabilitation management program.

“…Furthermore, baseline and post-intervention mean differences (MDs) indicated significant improvements in peak oxygen uptake (MD ¼ 5.0 mL/kg/min, SD ¼ 6.0 mL/kg/min); peak power output, measured in watts (MD ¼ 38. 6 A case report showed the effects of 7 days of exercise in a 10-month post-onset patient using the podiatron (described in Table 3 online). 12 The results showed improvements from baseline in walking confidence (b44% using the VAS) and the surface area of the elevated left foot (63%) and right foot (92%).…”

“…[3][4][5] Altered soft-tissue length, muscle weakness, and sensory changes affect balance, posture, joint mobility, and gait. 1,2,6,7 Studies have shown that physical fitness can positively influence not only outcomes such as mobility and fatigue levels in GBS patients (GBSPs) but also mental functioning. 8 Although some articles have noted beneficial effects of exercise on GBSPs, some have reported the contrary, stating that this population has had unfavourable responses to exercise.…”

“…Dysphagia and facial weakness are impending sings of respiratory failure. 5,6 Optimal management and treatment of GBS is critically important because the stakes are life or death. Although many patients with GBS are desperately ill and paralyzed, their chances of a full recovery are high if they can overcome the acute stages.…”

“…Recovery usually begins 2-4 weeks after the progressive phase. 5,6 CSF studies are helpful for the diagnosis. CSF proteins are elevated to more than twice the upper normal limits.…”

“…The demyelination of peripheral nerve axons produces symmetrical motor paralysis, which progressively ascends from the lower limbs and causes tingling, burning sensations and areflexia [1,2]. Altered soft-tissue length, muscle weakness and sensory change affect balance, posture, joint mobility and gait [1,3]. A study reported that among 556 patients with GBS, 9% walked independently without walking aid, 21% walked with a walker and 23% were pushed in a wheelchair [4].…”
