Muscular Grip Strength Estimates of the U.S. Population From the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011–2012

Abstract: The purposes of this study were to use the National Health and Nutrition Examination Study (2011-12) data to determine nationally representative combined handgrip strength ranges and percentile information by sex and age group, examine trends in strength across age by sex, and to determine the relative proportion of children and adults falling into established health benefit zones (HBZ). Results indicate that mean strength was greater among men than women and increased linearly for children and in a quadratic … Show more

“…The cut-off points were 20 kg for women and 30 kg for men, which were within the range for borderline musculoskeletal frailty in a number of reviews. 5,15,16 We also used lower cut-off points for weak grip strength of 26 kg for men and 16 kg for women, 5 and the continuous variable 17 for grip strength in a sensitivity analysis with dental status.…”

“…We analyzed the descriptive characteristics separately in male and female, due to the documented age-related sex difference in suicidal ideation. 32,33 Weighted means and standard errors were calculated and presented for continuous variables, while weighted proportions were summarized for categorical variables.…”
