This study employs qualitative analysis techniques for text mining, and its primary focus is on interview data collected from 105 elderly residents living in Mihama City, Fukui Prefecture. The overarching goal of this research is to uncover valuable insights into the specific needs and requirements of the elderly population in this region. Through text mining, several key elements have surfaced, shedding light on important aspects of the elderly residents’ lives. These findings underscore the significance of spaces designed to facilitate social interaction, as well as the indispensable role that policy support plays in ensuring the mobility and accessibility of the elderly within the community. Leveraging advanced cluster analysis techniques, a robust conceptual model has emerged. This model offers a comprehensive perspective on the myriad factors that are vital for nurturing an environment in which elderly individuals can not only exist but thrive in contentment and security. One of the significant contributions of this research is the proposal of a holistic leadership model. This model does not merely advocate for policy implementation; it also strongly emphasizes fostering collaboration with the local business sectors. The foundation of this model is built on the principles of continuous engagement with and listening to the evolving needs of the elderly population, rigorous policy implementation, periodic review, and an ongoing commitment to making iterative improvements. The findings of this study underscore the immense importance of actively involving various stakeholders and local businesses in the city planning process. The ultimate objective is to create an environment finely tuned to optimize the overall well-being of older adults, ensuring that they can enjoy a fulfilling and secure lifestyle within the community.

The “Kinguaariit Inuunerissut” (KI) camps, meaning “generations in well-being” in Greenlandic, was a pilot initiative designed to enhance cultural identity and intergenerational connections through culturally relevant activities. The outcomes of the KI-camps have informed the development of a broader KI-concept aiming at tailoring and implementing elements from KI-camps into early childhood education services, after-school programmes, and schools. In this paper we present the results from three workshop held in January 2024 in Sisimiut, Greenland where 28 older participants and 28 professionals were asked about essential knowledge and skills to be passed down to younger generations. The focus was on songs, storytelling/myths, the spiritual world, animals, plants, skills in nature/home, and handicrafts. Results shows that older people and professionals agree on the importance of passing down cultural knowledge through all the different categories and support the need to integrate these elements into educational programmes to preserve cultural heritage and strengthen community cohesion. The findings will guide the integration of intergenerational activities into municipal institutions and contribute to culturally relevant health promotion strategies in Greenland.

Effect of Detraining on Muscle Strength, Functional Capacity, Mental Health, and Body Composition in Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a condition that significantly affects the quality of life (QoL) of individuals, causing motor, physiological, social, and psychological impairments. Physical exercise plays a crucial role in maintaining the health and functional capacity of these individuals, helping to minimize the negative impacts of SCI. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of detraining (DT) (reduction or cessation of physical exercise) during the pandemic on five individuals with thoracic SCI. We assessed muscle strength using strength tests, functional capacity using a functional agility test, mental health using anxiety and depression inventories, and body composition using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). The results after 33 months of DT showed significant losses in functional agility and MS, as well as a worsening in symptoms of anxiety and depression. It was observed that total body mass and fat mass (FM) exhibited varied behaviors among the individuals. Similarly, the results for lean body mass were heterogeneous, with one participant showing significant deterioration. It is concluded that DT caused by the pandemic worsened the physical and mental condition of individuals with SCI, highlighting the importance of continuous exercise for this population and underscoring the need for individual assessments to fully understand the impacts of DT.
