Musculo‐articular disorders of the stomatoganthic system in school children examined according to clinical criteria

Abstract: The present investigations were undertaken for establishing the frequency of musculo-articular disorders of the stomatognathic system in healthy children as well as determining their features and degree. The study covered 500 children from Warsaw's primary schools--250 children aged 6-8 years and 250 aged 13-15 years. An incidence of disorder of 56-4 and 67-6% was found in the groups of younger and older children, respectively; their number and severity being significantly higher among the latter. “…Joint tenderness was seen in 5.2% of the sample and this is in agreement with studies done by Pullinger et al [10], Solberg et al [8], Spencer [9], Swanljung et al [15], Hansson et al [16] and Grossfield et al [17] which showed joint tenderness from 2 to 10%. In this study no significant relation was found between joint tenderness and attrition.…”

“…Mild forms of signs and symptoms of craniomandibular disorders (CMD) with only a few sex, but many racial, differences, were found to occur to a high degree, similar to the prevalences reported from studies on the 7-yearold age group (Grosfeld & Czarnecka, 1977;Egermark et al, 1981). Bruxism was more common in AfrieanAmerican children, bui only at the 5% level.…”

“…However, the possible effect of morphological occlusion parameters on TMJD is not well known: some authors mention significant associations between occlusal factors and TMJD (Williamson, 1977;Mohlin et al, 1980;Brandt, 1985;Riolo et al, 1987), while others do not (Grosfeld & Czarnecka, 1977;Green & Marbach, 1982;Gunn, Woolfolk & Faja, 1988;Helm & Petersen, 1989). Some state that morphological occlusion aspects, together with functional occlusion problems, can cause TMJD (Egermark-Eriksson et al, 1983).…”
