Mutagenic potential of water from Pelotas Creek in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Water resource degradation is one of mankind's greatest worries, as it causes direct and indirect damage to the associated biota. We initiated a water monitoring study in Pelotas Creek in 2003 in order to assess the mutagenic effect of the creek's waters. Allium cepa cells exposed to water samples and a chronically exposed macrophyte were analyzed, through evaluation of the mitotic index, mitotic anomalies, interphase anomalies, and total anomalies. Five points were chosen along the lower course of P… Show more

“…Besides, low values of dissolved oxygen (DO), high conductivity values and color, (Table 1) allow us to infer the existence of a high load of organic pollution likely originated from domestic sewage in these waters also confirmed by analysis of thermotolerant coliforms (Table 2).Similar results to these were also found by Santos et al, (2009) and Bianchi et al (2011).…”

“…In recent years, various studies testing the system Allium cepa has been conducted in order to evaluate the effects of industrial and domestic effluents into surface waters (Santos et al, 2009 ;Barbosa et al, 2010 ;Bianchi et al, 2011;Nunes et al, 2011;Düsman et al, 2013). Overall, the highest genotoxic activity values for superficial water samples were found in points 2 and 3, suggesting that these points had been compromised to a greater extent due to the presence of genotoxic compounds, a result that was also found in sediment samples.…”

“…Our results are consistent with previous studies in México, Argentina, Chile and Colombia that reported 45,X monosomy as the most common karyotype associated with TS: 30%, 35%, 60%, and 73%, respectively (Cortés‐Gutiérrez, Dávila‐Rodríguez, Vargas‐Villarreal, & Cerda‐Flores, ; Del Rey et al, ; Román et al, ; Saldarriaga, Valencia, Fandiño‐Losada, Andrés Ruiz, & Isaza, ). In contrast, in a Brazilian register somatic mosaicism (53.6%) was more common than the classic karyotype (28.6%) (Duarte et al, ). TS diagnosis is usually postponed until adolescence when pubertal delay, infertility and amenorrhea are present.…”

“…DS and TS often evidenced great karyotype variability (Duarte et al, ; Gimeno‐Martos et al, ), which emphasized the importance of differential cytogenetic diagnosis confirmation. The rest of structural autosome rearrangements were similarly scarce and varied (Duarte et al, ; Gimeno‐Martos et al, ; Gómez‐Puente et al, ).…”
