“…Nylund et al (1994) applied the SOS Chromotest and the Ames test (TA100, 3 9 ) to study kraft pulp spent liquors, and found the results of both assays to be similar. In a recent study of whole and fractionated bleached kraft mill effluent, Rao et al (1994) reported positive SOS Chromotest responses in XAD/NaOH extracts and in the original unfiltered effluent. This last study also showed some agreement between E. coli PQ37 and Salmonella strain TA100.…”

“…There is a great variety of extraction᎐ concentration procedures that are used to fractionate effluents and to perform biological testing including among others microbial, algal, and invertebrate bio-Ž monitoring schemes Walsh and Garnas, 1983;Wells et . al., 1990;Houk, 1992;Rao et al, 1994 .…”

“…The Ames Salmonella Microsomal Mutagenicity test was carried out using S. typhimrrriirm TA-I00 without exogenous activation (S9). Filtered effluent sample (c0.2 pm) and the DEAE filtrate were tested for mutagenicity using the fluctuation assay procedure (Rao et al, 1994) at doses of 12.5-75% of the reaction mixture. Methanol extract of the DEAE effluent concentrate was assayed for mutagenicity using the Ames plate incorporation procedure (Maron and Ames, 1983) at doses of 50-500 pL per plate.…”

“…(1990) demonstrated that the Ames mutagenic materials in effluent acted as promoters of aflatoxin E l using fish bioassays. Rao et al (1994) have recently used the Ames test to shows that the majority of mutagenic substances in filtered pulp mill effluent were recoverable in certain effluent fractions (XAD-4 and XAD-8) using sodium hydroxide or methanol elution. These mutagenic materials in pulp mill effluent were predominantly direct acting mutagens, relatively polar and possibly organic acids.…”
