“…It was suggested that when styrene is tested together with a rat liver microsomal fraction, the concentration of styrene oxide may be too low to be detected as mutagenic. Negative results were reported in the Salmonellal microsomes test by Stoltz and Withey (1977) and in a forward-mutation assay with yeast by Loprieno et al (1976), both in the presence of a liver microsomal fraction. Using the forward-mutation assay with yeast, Loprienzo et al (1976) found no effect in the host-mediated assay or in a test of styrene on Chinese hamster cells in the absence of a metabolic activation system.…”

“…Both positive and negative results have been obtained using a metabolic activation system [Busk, 1979;De Meester et al, 1977;Loprieno et al, 1978;Stolz and Withey, 1977;Vainio et al, 19761. In in vivo investigations in mice, the aberration rate in bone marrow cells was unaffected by administering styrene by gavage [Loprieno et al, 19781. In contrast, the rate of chromosome aberrations in bone marrow cells of rats increased significantly after an eleven-week-inhalation test [Meretoja et al, 19783.…”

“…In vitro investigations showed, that styrene itself has no direct mutagenic activity in any of the bacterial tester strains [Busk, 1979;De Meester et al, 1977;Loprieno et al, 1978;Stolz and Withey, 1977;Vainio et al, 19761. “…On the other hand, negative results have been observed with styrene using Salmonella typhimurium as target cells in the absence or presence of liver homogenates (Stoltz and Withey, 1977;Milvy and Garro, 1976;Busk, 1979;Loprieno et 01., 1978), even when epoxide hydratase or glutathione conjugation was inhibited (Busk, 1979).…”
