Service Level Agreements are employed to set availability commitments in cloud services. When a violation occurs as in an outage, cloud providers may be called to compensate customers for the losses incurred. Such compensation may be so large as to erode cloud providers’ profit margins. Insurance may be used to protect cloud providers against such a danger. In this paper, closed formulas are provided through the expected utility paradigm to set the insurance premium under different outage models and QoS metrics (no. of outages, no. of long outages, and unavailability). When the cloud service is paid through a fixed fee, we also provide the maximum unit compensation that a cloud provider can offer so as to meet constraints on its profit loss. The unit compensation is shown to vary approximately as the inverse square of the service fee.

Service Level Agreements (SLA) are commonly used to specify the quality attributes between cloud service providers and the customers. A violation of SLAs can result in high penalties.To allow the analysis of SLA compliance before the services are deployed, we describe in this paper an approach for SLA-aware deployment of services on the cloud, and illustrate its workflow by means of a case study. The approach is based on formal models combined with static analysis tools and generated runtime monitors. As such, it fits well within a methodology combining software development with information technology operations (DevOps).

Cloud availability is a major performance parameter in cloud Service Level Agreements (SLA). Its correct evaluation is essential to SLA enforcement and possible litigation issues. Current methods fail to correctly identify the fault location, since they include the network contribution. We propose a procedure to identify the failures actually due to the cloud itself and provide a correct cloud availability measure. The procedure employs tools that are freely available, i.e. traceroute and whois, and arrives at the availability measure by first identifying the boundaries of the cloud. We evaluate our procedure by testing it on three major cloud providers: Google Cloud, Amazon AWS, and Rackspace. The results show that the procedure arrives at a correct identification in 95% of cases. The cloud availability obtained in the test after correct identification lies between 3 and 4 nines for the three platforms under test.
