Mutual radicalization and the coronavirus pandemic.

Abstract: Underlying concepts such as "superordinate goals" and "common group identity" is the idea that we humans would achieve peaceful relationships if we adopt a common goal and shared identity. A number of classic (e.g., Sherif, 1966) and contemporary (e.g., Kunst et al., 2015) lines of research support this perspective. Building on this tradition, peace psychologists might view the global coronavirus pandemic that rapidly spread in 2020 as an opportunity to unite humanity: we are all in this together, against a co… Show more

These efforts should be driven by “superordinate goals” and a “common group identity” (Gaertner & Dovidio, 2000; Moghadam, 2020) promoting the idea that we, humans, will achieve peaceful relationships if we adopt a common goal and shared human identity, strongly founded in social psychology theories (Allport, 1954; Sherif, 1966). Olympism, the integration of Peace Education, Sport, and Cultural Diplomacy, can potentially serve as an unconventional platform for pursuing such peacebuilding goals and social psychological outcomes (Beutler, 2008; Guest, 2013; Lyras, 2003, 2007, 2012a, 2012b, 2014, 2017, 2020; Sugden & Tomlinson, 2018).…”
