‘My family’s goals are also my goals’: the relationship between collectivism, distal utility value, and learning and career goals of international university students in Germany

Abstract: The utility value of an academic task can affect university students’ learning behavior and career choices. For collectivistic-oriented students, learning and career goals also matter to their families. Following expectancy-value theory, we assumed that families’ achievement-related expectations would affect collectivistic-oriented students’ utility value. We conducted a survey study with 154 international university students in Germany. We found a significant mediation effect of students’ distal utility value… Show more

“…The child's development is even influenced by interactions in more distal environments such as their community and the broader society and its institutions, political and economic systems, social media and others. As regards the development of children's educational and learningrelated beliefs, attitudes, motivations, and other psychological functions, we could also see them as being shaped by their interactions in the home, school, and other relevant social environments [53,54]. Even actual educational achievement can be viewed as being distally shaped by these environmental systems [55].…”

“…Findings from the current study suggest that Item 6 ( I become interested in new pursuits every few months —reverse-scored) and Item 7 ( I finish whatever I begin ) are particularly problematic, as they negatively correlated with other items in the scale and did not load sufficiently onto any factors during exploratory factor analysis. It may have been difficult for respondents to answer item 6 because in collectivist cultures, one’s long-term goals are more likely to be determined, or at least heavily influenced, by one’s family (Mok et al, 2021). It is possible that because their goals were set by others, the adolescents may have been unable to relate to the concept of their goals changing.…”

“…As a result, the systematic culture perspective refutes that Eastern and Western cultures have fundamentally distinct values. By focusing on intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, a study can examine international students' personnel travel behavior in terms of academic and personal growth, better career prospects, and economic benefits, or they may have an intention to avoid disadvantageous conditions in their home country, which are intrinsic motivations (Mok, Bakac & Froehlich, 2020). Therefore, those gaps identified in the past studies will be further investigated in the present study.…”
