My patient has abdominal and flank pain: Identifying renal causes

Abstract: Acute flank and abdominal pain are common presenting complaints in the emergency department. With increasing access to point-of-care ultrasound (PoCUS), emergency physicians have an added tool to help identify renal problems as a cause of a patient's pain. PoCUS for hydronephrosis has a sensitivity of 72-83.3% and a varying specificity, similar to radiology-performed ultrasonography. In addition to assessment for hydronephrosis, PoCUS can help emergency physicians to exclude other serious causes of flank and a… Show more

“…Renal ultrasound is a component of POCUS training and assessment; most EM graduates will have significant experience using ultrasound at the bedside [ 6 - 7 ]. POCUS is available in all academic EDs and most community EDs and has been shown to be effective in urinary tract imaging as a quick and effective way to locate and characterize distal urethral stones to assess for obstruction [ 8 ]. The use of POCUS allows for a more rapid diagnosis, shorter length of stay, and decreased exposure to radiation by decreasing the need for computed tomography [ 7 ].…”

“…For abdominal aorta aneurysm (AAA) and suprapubic view, abdominal aorta was scanned on the superior umbilical line in the transverse plane. AAA is defined when the diameter greater than 3 cm in literature [18,19]. In this study, scanning was performed to find a significant visual one.…”
