Mycobacterial infection of intraparenchymal bronchogenic cysts

Abstract: Bronchogenic cysts (BCs) may rarely cause some interesting and unusual complications. Although infection is a common complication of BCs, there are only two patients with BC infected with mycobacterium in English literature. Two intraparenchymal BCs infected with mycobacterium are presented here as unusual complications. Cystectomy was performed for the cysts. They were given antituberculosis treatment. No complication or recurrences were detected in follow up period.

However, M. tuberculosis was isolated from sputum in only one case, and no organisms were isolated in the other two cases.…”

“…A total of six case reports of intraparenchymal BCs complicated with mycobacterial infection have been published (2)(3)(4)6,9). In a report of two cases by Liman et al (3), cysts were detected by radiograph or CT, and the diagnoses of TB were made after thoracotomy.…”

“…Sputum acid-fast stain and mycobacterial cultures were negative. Liman et al reported two adult cases: a 20 year-old male with Mycobacterium identified in a right lower lobe specimen but with negative sputum culture, and a 32-year-old female with Mycobacterium isolated in a sputum culture but a negative microscopic exam and cyst fluid culture [8]. …”
