Mycobacterium abscessus, an Emerging and Worrisome Pathogen among Cystic Fibrosis Patients

Abstract: Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) have recently emerged as important pathogens among cystic fibrosis (CF) patients worldwide. Mycobacterium abscessus is becoming the most worrisome NTM in this cohort of patients and recent findings clarified why this pathogen is so prone to this disease. M. abscessus drug therapy takes up to 2 years and its failure causes an accelerated lung function decline. The M. abscessus colonization of lung alveoli begins with smooth strains producing glycopeptidolipids and biofilm, whil… Show more

“…Available data suggest that TB inactive compounds may retain activity against NTM species, encouraging a broader perspective on potential candidates for treating NTM infections. In testing NTM species, different morphotypes should be assessed because of the potential for varied susceptibility to antimicrobials [ 26 , 98 ].…”

“…Lastly, the novel formulation of liposomal amikacin for inhalation (LAI) that reduced toxicity and improved effectiveness for M. abscessus also completed clinical phase II in 2019. However, as yet, no study results have been posted on ( ) for all these clinical trials [ 16 , 17 ]. To make matters worse, there are not many active new drug candidates in clinical phase I studies, even at the discovery level.…”

“…However, recent evidence suggests person-to-person transfer among patients with cystic fibrosis. 11,12 Historically, NTM strains are isolated from natural sources such as water supplies and soil. 2,10 NTM strains are found in constructed sources such as bathroom showers and household water heaters where temperature settings are insufficient to kill the organism, thus leading to aerosolization of the organism that makes it capable of infiltrating alveoli.…”
