Mycobacterium massiliense BRA100 strain recovered from postsurgical infections: resistance to high concentrations of glutaraldehyde and alternative solutions for high level disinfection

Abstract: Purpose:To evaluate the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of GTA against these microorganisms and alternative disinfectants for high-level disinfection (HLD). Methods: Reference mycobacteria and clinical M. massiliense strains were included in this study. Active cultures were submitted to susceptibility qualitative tests with GTA dilutions (ranging from 1.5% to 8%), and commercial orthophthaldehyde (OPA) and peracetic acid (PA) -based solutions, during the period of exposure as recommended by National Age… Show more

“…9,10 However, little is known about the stability of the antimicrobial action of this product when in contact with instruments contaminated with microorganisms and organic material such as blood and saliva. These contaminated instruments must undergo a final disinfection prior to washing, which is known as "purging" in the hospital environment, to eliminate many or all pathogenic microorganisms.…”

“…Both patients had confirmed pulmonary disease and lived in RJ, where more than 1,000 possible surgical-site infection cases were reported to ANVISA (12), but these isolates harbor distinct biological properties, such as clarithromycin resistance and susceptibility to glutaraldehyde at Ͻ1.5%, while the epidemic strain is susceptible to clarithromycin and tolerant of glutaraldehyde. Therefore, they may be considered a different strain or a biological variant of the epidemic strain (12,20).…”

“…Most of the studies recommend washing with autoclaved water and or sterile normal saline and immediate drying of the instruments. [13] The most commonly used agent for sterilization of laparoscopic instruments is 2% glutaraldehyde. Instruments (both ports with trocars and hand instruments) need to be immersed in the said solution for at least 10 hours for proper sterilization and a minimum of twenty minutes for disinfection.…”
