Mycotoxins in Raw Bovine Milk: UHPLC-QTrap-MS/MS Method as a Biosafety Control Tool

Abstract: Mycotoxins are compounds produced by several fungi that contaminate agricultural fields and, either directly or by carry-over, final food products. Animal exposure to these compounds through contaminated feed can lead to their excretion into milk, posing threats to public health. Currently, aflatoxin M1 is the sole mycotoxin with a maximum level set in milk by the European Union, as well as the most studied. Nonetheless, animal feed is known to be contaminated by several groups of mycotoxins with relevance fro… Show more

“…More recently, in 2023, AFM1 was detected in all of the raw cow milk samples from Ethiopia [ 28 ]. However, no AFM1 occurrence was detected in raw cow milk from Portugal in 2023 [ 29 ]. North African counties, including Tunisia, which are surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Red Sea, have a humid and warm climate that may encourage fungal development and mycotoxin production.…”

“…Extraction of regulated and emerging mycotoxins was based on the previously reported protocol on the validation of these compounds in raw milk [35]. Briefly, a volume of 4.0 ± 0.1 mL of each raw milk sample was mixed with 16 mL of ACN:H 2 O (80:20, v/v), and submitted to automatic homogenization through a horizontal shaker for 60 min.…”

“…Mycotoxin analysis of raw cow milk samples was also performed as previously described in [35]. Succinctly, chromatographic separation was performed by using an AC-QUITY UPLC ® HSS T3 1.8 µm (2.1 × 100 mm i.d.)…”

“…Industrial wastes, pesticides, heavy metals, mycotoxins, etc. are becoming more and more serious threats to food safety [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]. Peanuts, with rich nutrients and health value, are a type of important oil crop [ 5 ], but they are susceptible to aflatoxin contamination.…”
