Myelomeningocele Repair Combining a Double Cryopreserved Amniotic Membrane Homograft and the Keystone Flap in a 3-Year-Old Child: A Case Report

Abstract

• Severe forms of myelomeningocele are usually fatal if not treated early. • Treatment needs neurosurgical repair and adequate, long-lasting soft tissue coverage. • Only a few cases of the use of cryopreserved amniotic membrane (AM) homograft as an adjunct to dural repair have been reported. Novel Insights • The unusual advanced age of the patient, a 3-year-old child, with severe myelomeningocele. • The use, for the first time, of combining treatment involving a double cryopreserved AM homograft and a bilateral Keystone flap to reconstruct the dural layer and the soft tissue defect caused by the large myelomeningocele.
