Myoepithelial carcinoma of buccal mucosa: A rare tumor

Abstract: Myoepithelial carcinoma is a rare neoplasm of salivary glands that account for < 1% of all salivary gland tumors. The most common sites of involvement are major salivary glands mainly parotid gland. Intraorally, it can arise from minor salivary glands; palate is the most common site of occurrence. It also occurs in nasopharynx, paranasal sinuses, nasal cavity and larynx in head and neck region. Myoepithelial tumors were first described in 1943. Their malignant variant, myoepithelial carcinoma, was first report… Show more

“…14 Case reports also have documented MCC appearing in the nasopharynx, larynx, and lungs. 7 Patients typically present with an asymptomatic mass, but symptoms may include tenderness, dysphagia, and hoarseness. In palatal tumors, invasion of the bone can be seen in some instances.…”

“…Case reports have documented oral cavity MCC occurring in buccal mucosa, hard palate, alveolar ridge, retromolar trigone, and lips. 7 At the time of publication, all current case reports of primary tongue MCC describe tumors that appear to have originated in the base of tongue. 8,9 Myoepithelial cells constitute an important component of glandular acini and ducts.…”

“…Myoepithelial carcinoma, also known as malignant myoepithelioma, is a rare neoplasm that accounts for less than 2% of salivary gland tumors [1]. It forms a painless, slow-growing mass that most commonly arises from the palate and major salivary glands like the parotid [2, 3], although it can arise from the minor glands of the oral mucosa [4, 5]. In a 2015 study involving 29 patients over 10 years, the most common sites were the parotid gland, submandibular gland, and palate [6].…”
