Myositis Ossificans of the Temporal Muscle as a Primary Scalp Tumor-Case Report-

Abstract: A 38-year-old woman presented with a rare case of myositis ossificans in the temporal muscle manifesting as left temporal scalp mass with mild pain. The mass was elastic-hard and seemed to be located in the temporal muscle. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a heterogeneously enhanced mass in the muscle. The tumor was resected. The histological diagnosis was myositis ossificans. The clinicopathological features of scalp myositis ossificans may mimic other soft tissue tumors, requiring care for the differentia… Show more

“…MOC most frequently occurs in the flexor muscles of the upper arm, the quadriceps femoris and the abductor muscles of the thigh [1]. Occurrence within the head and neck musculature is decidedly uncommon but the lesion has been reported in the paraspinal, masseter and temporalis muscles [1720]. Our case is the first to report the appearance of MOC within the buccinator as an unusual postoperative complication of mandibular third molar surgery.…”

“…It is difficult to diagnose and usually appears in adolescents or young adult men. MOT is frequently reported in the orthopedic literature Case Report (2,5,6) and is rarely found in the head or neck, including the masticatory muscle (6,7). Here, we report a case of MOT involving the medial pterygoid muscle which had developed as a postoperative complication of endodontic treatment.…”

“…Myositis ossificans of the head and neck region is more commonly found in the masseteric, 3 temporalis, 5,9 buccinator, 10 pterygoideus, 11 sternomastoid 12 and rarely in the scaleneus medius 13 muscles. The case reported here was found in an unusual location; the orbital plate of the frontal bone.…”

“…8 Surgical excision is the main stay of treatment for myositis ossificans circumscripta. 2,3,9,10 Previous reports of this pathology occurring in the head and neck region are case reports involving the temporalis 5,9 and the masticatory 3,10,11 muscles. We therefore present a case of limitation of ocular movement from myositis ossificans circumscripta in a very unusual location; the orbital plate of the frontal bone with no previous history of trauma.…”
