Myxofibrosarcoma: Prognostic Factors and Survival in a Series of Patients Treated at a Single Institution

Abstract: Patients with myxofibrosarcoma have a better disease-specific survival than other sarcoma subtypes, but also a higher local relapse rate. This is likely related to the peculiar local growth pattern of these tumors. Adequate surgery should be pursued, while the role of adjuvant therapies need to be investigated.

“…Chemotherapy with doxorubicin and ifosfamide has been used in cases of tumor recurrence. MFSs have a better 5-year overall survival rate of 61% than other types of sarcoma [16,18]. In conclusion, we present a rare case of a retroperitoneal MFS in a middle-aged woman, with histopathological and immunohistochemical findings, to help differential diagnosis in future cases.…”

“…A local recurrence rate of 31% and a metastasis rate of 17% have been reported during the 3.5 years of follow-up post-surgery [16,17]. Lungs, bones, and lymph nodes are the most common metastatic sites of MFS [14,16,18]. Radical surgical eradication of the tumor with sufficient resection of surrounding margins is the recommended treatment option for MFS.…”

“…These factors are not synonymous with prognostic factors although to a degree similar [4,26]. Since surgery remains the mainstay of extremity sarcoma and squamous cell carcinoma treatment, CDP scores may help in decisional practicalities such as to at what point in time to proceed with reconstruction, but not necessarily in deciding on different combinations of treatments or the scope of all treatments.…”

“…Modern imaging allows the adoption and utilization of surgical advantages provided by biological barriers of tumors (e.g., fascia, periosteum, cartilage). It also allows for the sparing of tissue which would have to be excised if one would follow extensive compartmental resections and may even allow for the use of some spared tissue for the reconstruction process [4,5,9,26,27].…”

“…27,28 These tumors commonly arise in the extremities of elderly individuals. Unlike other sarcomas, when located superficially, the tumor infiltrates through soft tissue (subcutaneous fat and investing fascia) centimeters beyond the ostensible margins of the visible or palpable mass, even at initial presentation.…”
