Myxoid neurofibroma: An unusual presentation

Abstract: Myxoid neurofibroma (MN) is a benign tumor of perineural cell origin, which is demonstrated with a positive immunohistochemical staining for S-100 protein. The most common locations of the MN are the face, shoulders, arms, periungual and in the feet. To our knowledge, this is the first time that a trunk location is reported. MN should be included in the differential diagnosis of tumors on this location.

“…27 Myxoid neurofibroma is a tumor with myxoid characteristics that can be located in a wide variety of sites and stains positive for S-100 and negative for desmin, whereas AA is S-100 negative and desmin positive. 28 Myxoid liposarcoma is a malignant tumor composed of primitive nonlipogenic mesenchymal cells and lipoblasts with no hormone receptors on the cell surface. 29 Cellular angiofibroma is a more cellular tumor with well-circumscribed margins, usually occurring in subcutaneous locations.…”

“…[2] Myxoid neurofibroma is poorly circumscribed and an unencapsulated lesion, which lacks lobular architecture and shows patchy S-100 positivity. [7] Myxoid schwannoma shows foci of Antoni A with Verocay bodies. They do not show multinodularity but express S-100.…”

“…These tumours are confused often clinically and histopathologically with myxomas. Myxomas have no nerve involvement and are S100 negative [ 2 ].…”
