Myxoma of the mitral valve.

Abstract: A case of myxoma of the mitral valve is reported. The clinical features were indistinguishable from left atrial myxoma with prolapse through the mitral valve. Because of the known tendency for these tumours to recur it was treated by wide excision which necessitated replacement of the mitral valve.

“…Although most cardiac myxomas arise from the fossa ovalis of the left atrium, a few cases of the mitral valve myxoma have been reported. [3][4][5] In the present case microscopic examination showed no evidence of myxoma tissue in the completely resected mass or the distal embolus. Egeblad and Hesse used 2-dimensional echocardiography to examine a patient with mitral valve prolapse and reported a mobile polypoid mass adhered to a recess between the mitral valve and the septum; 6 however, no histological study was performed in that case.…”

“…Cardiac myxoma is rare in children and even more rarely afflicts only the mitral valve [1,3]. It appears in approximately 10% cases of primary cardiac tumour.…”

“…They include congestive heart failure, loss of consciousness, embolisms, arrhythmia, and even sudden death. Non-specific symptoms are weight loss, fever, and arthralgia [1,3,4]. Laboratory tests reveal an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, anaemia, leucocytosis, and raised levels of acute-phase proteins [6].…”
