In Africa, the montane rain-forest seems to be more productive (Harkonen & Saarimaki, 1991) and, in Thailand, the montane forests dominated by oaks, chestnuts and magnolias produced species more appropriate to temperate woodlands (Siwasin & Ing, 1982) and with greater diversity than the lowland rain forest (Ing, Siwasin & Samaranpan, 1987).
