n-3 fatty acids reduce plasma 20-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid and blood pressure in patients with chronic kidney disease

Abstract: This is the first report that n-3 fatty acid supplementation reduces plasma 20-HETE in humans and that this associates with reduced BP. These results provide a plausible mechanism for the reduction in BP observed in patients with CKD following n-3 fatty acid supplementation.

“…Clinical epidemiological studies have demonstrated a significant association between reduced n -3 PUFA consumption and the risk of ischemic heart disease [ 24 ], suggesting that n -3 PUFA replacement may improve clinical outcomes in high-risk populations. In patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis, n -3 PUFA reduce all-cause mortality [ 25 ], the incidence of myocardial infarction [ 26 ] and improves blood pressure [ 27 ]. However, their impact on endothelial dysfunction, an early marker of cardiovascular disease is currently unknown in this setting.…”

“…High ratios of n-3/n-6 play an important role in human health as these prevent and reduce human cardiovascular diseases [36,75], which represent the second cause of death in France after cancer [76]. Indeed, n-3 PUFA reduces cardiac frequency [62,63], (improves vascular function, reduces plasma 20-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid and blood pressure in patients with chronic kidney disease) [77]. Furthermore, in the present study, it prevents human coronary diseases [78], increases sensitivity to insulin [79], and reduces arterial stiffness [80].…”
