N-Doped Graphene Nanoplatelets as Superior Metal-Free Counter Electrodes for Organic Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract: Highly efficient counter electrodes (CEs) for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) were developed using thin films of scalable and high-quality, nitrogen-doped graphene nanoplatelets (NGnP), which was synthesized by a simple two-step reaction sequence. The resultant NGnP was deposited on fluorine-doped SnO2 (FTO)/glass substrates by using electrospray (e-spray) coating, and their electrocatalytic activities were systematically evaluated for Co(bpy)3(3+/2+) redox couple in DSSCs with an organic sensitizer. “…The additional lone pair electrons of nitrogen atoms can also bring negative charges with respect to the delocalized π-system of an sp 2 -hybridized carbon framework, which may enhance electron-transfer ability and electrocatalytic activities [165,166]. So far, N-doped carbons were also investigated as highly electrocatalytic CE materials for the DSSC [166][167][168][169][170][171]. They found that the N-doped carbon materials presented a small R ct for the I ଷ ି reduction, indicating a higher catalytic activity than the pristine carbon.…”

“…(3)], larger slope of the anodic or cathodic branch forebodes higher J 0 on the electrode with smaller R ct in the theory. If the CE has an J 0 of 20 mA cm -2 , this J 0 value corresponds to an R ct = 1.3 X cm 2 (n = 1) at room temperature [45].…”

“…The efficient electrocatalytic graphene for electrochemical reactions can be achieved by creating the catalytically active sites in graphene while maintaining its high charge mobility. More recently, considerable efforts have been devoted to introduce heteroatoms, such as nitrogen, boron and etc., into graphene oxide [20,21] or graphene nanoplatelets [16,22] for improvement of their electrocatalytic activity. To the best of our knowledge, little attention has been focused on graphene films grown by chemical vapour deposition (CVD) as CEs for the DSSCs, which is due to the inert nature of the pristine graphene with limited defects or edge planes.…”
