N4 component responses to pre-pulse startle stimuli in young adults: Relationship to alcohol dependence

Abstract: Both physiological and behavioral studies provide evidence to suggest that deficits in frontal cortical control circuits may contribute to the risk for developing alcohol dependence. Event-related potential (ERP) and eye blink responses to startle and short delay prepulse-plus-startle stimuli, and psychiatric diagnoses were investigated in young adult (age 18-30 yrs) men (n=135) and women (n=205) Mexican Americans. Women displayed a significant increase in the amplitude of the eye blink response to both the st… Show more

“…The lifetime prevalence of substance dependence in this sample and associations with acculturation stress and other comorbid mental disorders has been previously reported (Criado and Ehlers, 2007; Criado et al, 2013; Ehlers and Phillips, 2007; Ehlers et al, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014; Gilder et al, 2007; Norden-Krichmar et al, 2014). Specifically, lifetime diagnoses of alcohol dependence, substance dependence, and anxiety disorders were associated with elevations in acculturation stress.…”

“…We have previously reported the presence of several cardiovascular risk factors including alcohol abuse and dependence in this sample of American Indians and Mexican Americans (e.g., [4, 2629]). However, our current results show that the incidence of alcohol and tobacco use and dependence is not different between obese and nonobese participants.…”

“…We have previously reported the presence of several cardiovascular risk factors including obesity and alcohol abuse and dependence in a community sample of American Indians and Mexican Americans residing in San Diego County (e.g., [4, 2629]). There is also evidence to suggest a relationship between these cardiovascular risk factors and reduced cardiovagal control ([3038]; but see [39]).…”

“…The present report is part of a larger study exploring risk factors for substance dependence among Native Americans and Mexican Americans residing in southwest California (Ehlers et al, 2004a,b, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010a,b, 2011). Although use of alcohol varies among tribes, as a whole, Native Americans suffer high rates of alcohol and drug dependence and higher alcohol-related death rates than any other U.S. ethnic group and alcohol dependence rates up to five times that of the general U.S. population (see Beals et al, 2005; Ehlers et al, 2004a, 2006; Robin et al, 1998; Shalala et al, 1999).…”
