Naevus comedonicus: a spectrum of body involvement

Abstract: Naevus comedonicus (NC) is a rare developmental anomaly, with < 200 cases reported in the literature. It usually occurs on the face, neck or chest, appearing as groups of closely arranged dilated follicular openings with keratin plugs. Several associations have been made in the literature. We review the current literature, emphasizing the clinical features, associated conditions and therapeutic options.

“…Inflammatory lesions like in our case are seen during puberty. 142 Characteristic histological features of nevus hyperproliferative, produce paracrine and autocrine signals, alert fibroblasts, endothelial cells, T-cells and neighboring keratinocytes change their cytoskeleton. 153 Characteristically, activated keratinocytes express keratin proteins K6, K16 and K17.…”

“…Additional manifestations of this syndrome include digital aplasia, polydactyly, syndactyly, oligodontia, and basal cell carcinoma (Table ) . Although half of the cases are obvious at birth, the other half become symptomatic during childhood, typically before the age of 10 years . The genetic basis of this syndrome is unknown but may be related to fibroblast growth receptor 2 (FGFR‐2), as FGFR‐2 mutations have been identified in the comedonal nevus but not in the surrounding normal skin .…”

“…10 Differentiation between these 2 entities is important because nevus comedonicus can occur in combination with other systemic abnormalities, such as skeletal and neurological disorders. 10 Differentiation between these 2 entities is important because nevus comedonicus can occur in combination with other systemic abnormalities, such as skeletal and neurological disorders.…”

“…6 To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of nodular cystic fat necrosis with metaplastic ossification. Osteoblasts secret several inducing factors such as bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-2, BMP-4, b-catenin, osteopontin, osteonectin, and osteocalcin, 10 which exert effects on the precursor cells derived from mesenchymal or adipose-derived cells. [7][8][9] Osteoblasts play a central role in the bone formation.…”
