SynopsisWorld consumers are nowadays more focused on their health and appearance. This trend is creating heightened demand for products formulated with natural and nutraceutical ingredients. Functional ingredients and innovative delivery systems are driving the new product development in the field of cosmetics. A significant number of innovative formulations are now being used in personal care with real consumer-perceivable benefits and optimized sensory attributes, resulting in an economic uplift of cosmetic industry. In fact, the U.S. market alone for novel cosmetic delivery systems has been projected to be more than $41 billion for the year 2007. Novel cosmetic delivery systems reviewed here possess enormous potential as next-generation smarter carrier systems. Ré suméLes consommateurs du monde entier portent aujourd'hui une plus grande importance à leur santé et à leur apparence. Cette tendance créée une demande accrue de produits formulés avec des ingrédients naturels et nutraceutiques. Les ingrédi-ents fonctionnels et les systèmes de libération innovants sont à la base du développement de nouveaux produits dans le domaine des cosmétiques. Un nombre significatif de formulations innovantes sont maintenant utilisées dans les soins personnels avec un bénéfice consommateur réellement perçu et des attributs sensoriels optimisés, ce qui conduit à un accroissement économique de l'industrie cosmé-tique. En fait, le seul marché US pour les nouveaux systèmes de libération a été estimé à plus de 41 milliards de $ pour 2007. Les nouveaux systèmes de libération cosmétique présentés ici possèdent un potentiel énorme en tant que prochaine génération de systèmes vecteurs plus sophistiqués.

In the last few decades, there has been a substantial increase in the population of people over 60 years of age. Most of them maintain a good general health and physical activity and fitness. For these individuals there is a good number of dermatologic procedures, medications, and cosmetics that can be prescribed to improve the aspect of skin aging, providing an improvement in their self-esteem and quality of life as a result of their better look. We will discuss the mechanisms of skin aging, and the procedures and substances used to minimize its deleterious effects, such as sunscreens, estrogens, chemical peels, toxin botulinum, fillers and surgical procedures, among others. The use of makeup and the adverse reactions to cosmetics will also be mentioned.

The clinical features of nail dystrophies depend on the part of the nail that has been damaged. Due to the important functions of fingernails and toenails, any abnormality of the nail causes impaired function of the hand or foot. Moreover, the aesthetic aspect of the nail may affect employability, self-esteem, and interaction with other people. Because the nails are often difficult to treat, cosmetology may be an effective support to medical treatment. Nail cosmetics may help the patient to cope with his or her nail dystrophy while waiting for treatment to show its efficacy. It may also be the only choice to hide nail dystrophy where the nail is irreversibly damaged. Nail cosmetics may also function at treatment for onychtillomania, nail biting, and nail ingrowing.
