Naked-Eye Detectable Chiral Recognition Using a Chromogenic Receptor

Abstract: This article is concerned with our recent achievement in developing synthetic chromogenic receptors for optical active amines and amino acid derivatives. Pre-organized (S)-1,1'-bi-2-naphthyl-and bis(indophenol)-derived calix[4]crown 1a shows naked-eye detectable chiral recognition between those enantiomers. The spectroscopic properties are reported, as well as an estimation of the enantioselectivity using an HPLC equipped with a chiral packing column.

“…On the other hand, a K value for 11a + (S)-18 could not be calculated because of the lack of a linear correlation. The observed enantioselectivity for phenylglycines in the extraction studies 42 agrees with the colorimetric chiral recognition phenomena as shown in Figure 6.…”

“…A variety of functional group-specic sensors for rapid determination of enantiopurity of chiral molecules have been reported, with specialized systems being described for alcohols, 5,6 amines, [7][8][9] amino acids, [10][11][12] amino alcohols, [13][14][15] carboxylic acids, [16][17][18][19] diamines, 20,21 and diols. 22,23 Many of these approaches employ specialized chemosensors that, while effective, are synthetically complex and not commercially available.…”

“…A convenient method without using any transducers, such as naked-eye detectable quantification, would be welcome in every field of analytical chemistry. 6 By observing the pattern using a microscope, it was thought to be the result of convection in the liquid drop (data not shown).…”
