Named data networking (NDN) has emerged as a component of the Future Internet architecture to support scalable content distribution, mobility, security, and trust; as well as to provide access to information irrespective of its physical location. The NDN, and previously content-centric networking (CCN), has been considered as the enabler to address various Internet of Things (IoT) challenges, with the potential to outperform the current IP paradigm in many dimensions. The requirements and challenges of the IoT, imposed by constraints, such as limited memory and computational power, while requiring high energy efficiency in the face of unstable network connectivity, impose extra burdens on the IP paradigm. The named content, in-network caching and named-based routing approach in the CCN and NDN provide promising solutions to overcome these constraints and showcase alternative implementations. This paper aims to investigate and demonstrate the current incorporation of the NDN/CCN with the IoT in terms of innetwork caching management, naming scheme for devices and data, access control and policies, forwarding strategies, device configuration, and discovery. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have become essential components for a variety of environmental, surveillance, military, traffic control, and healthcare applications. These applications face critical challenges such as communication, security, power consumption, data aggregation, heterogeneities of sensor hardware, and Quality of Service (QoS) issues. Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is a software architecture that can be integrated with WSN applications to address those challenges. The SOA middleware bridges the gap between the high-level requirements of different applications and the hardware constraints of WSNs. This survey explores state-of-the-art approaches based on SOA and Service-Oriented Middleware (SOM) architecture that provide solutions for WSN challenges. The categories of this paper are based on approaches of SOA with and without middleware for WSNs. Additionally, features of SOA and middleware architectures for WSNs are compared to achieve more robust and efficient network performance. Design issues of SOA middleware for WSNs and its characteristics are also highlighted. The paper concludes with future research directions in SOM architecture to meet all requirements of emerging application of WSNs.

Abstract. Wireless sensor networks based on miniaturized ultra low power nodes are increasingly utilized in highly demanding cyberphysical systems required to offer extended time periods of non-intrusive and unattended monitoring of specific biophysical signals. However, although significant performance enhancements are offered by state of the art WSN platforms, still scarce energy availability comprises the Achilles' Hill of respective platforms. A prominent approach to remedy this deficiency is to transfer part of the overall processing applied on raw data into the WSN node, aiming to reduce drastically the amount of data than need to be wirelessly transmitted, thus allowing the radio chip to be turned off most of the time. The proposed approach has been applied in the context of ARMOR project, which focuses on EEG based Epilepsy monitoring and automated seizure detection, considering that seizure detection is based upon specific EEG feature vectors representing just *5 % of the total amount of raw data. In that respect, this paper presents the design, implementation and evaluation of a novel EEG feature vector extraction hardware accelerator module. The validity of the module's functionality is verified against already published Matlab based seizure detection algorithms while performance benefits are also estimated.
