Names for Manihot esculenta: Geographical Variations and Lexical Clarification

Abstract: This study elucidates the derivations, distensions and distortions of the names for a major world crop domesticated in tropical America. In addition to the several Latin binomials, English speakers have used one or mare of six vernacular terms far this plant. Two of these words are straight borrowings (yuca from Spanish, mandioca from Portuguese and Spanish); one (yucca) implies and causes interference with an entirely different group of plants in the genus Yucca and two are conflated meanings that originally … Show more

“…More than 5,000 cassava cultivars are recognized globally (Best, 1993;Bokanga, 1994;Gade, 2003;IFAD/FAO, 2005) Munhaça variety being most common in the Southern Region; Inciricano and Bedo in the Central Region and Nikwaha, Tomo and Cororo varieties, in the Northern Region (MIC, 2007). Consumer preferences influence the variety consumed and are based on the color of the plant, sharpness of the leaf lobe and the color of the root peel (MIC, 2007;Gbadegesin et al, 2013).…”

“…Given that this paper seeks to compare the crop between these two land-masses the different conventions need to be mentioned. For consistency and pragmatic reasons we use 'cassava', the most commonly used term overall, aware that others have argued in favor of the universal application of 'manioc' (Gade 2002).…”

“…Manioc, or cassava [Manihot esculenta Crantz (Euphorbiaceae); see Gade (2002) for a defence of 'manioc' as the best term to refer to this plant in English], is a staple crop for over 750 million people, including 45% of the population of sub-Saharan Africa (FAO 2009), yet contains high concentrations of cyanogenic glucosides, principally linamarin, which break down to release toxic cyanide when crushed or chewed (Cardoso et al 2005;McMahon et al 1995;Nhassico et al 2008). Cyanide in the diet may result in individual cases of acute cyanide poisoning, a frequent complaint in some manioc-dependent parts of Africa.…”
