Nano- and Micro-Scale Impact Testing of Hard Coatings: A Review

Abstract: In this review, the operating principles of the nano-impact test technique are described, compared and contrasted to micro- and macro-scale impact tests. Impact fatigue mechanisms are discussed, and the impact behaviour of three different industrially relevant coating systems has been investigated in detail. The coating systems are (i) ultra-thin hard carbon films on silicon, (ii) DLC on hardened tool steel and (iii) nitrides on WC-Co. The influence of the mechanical properties of the substrate and the load-ca… Show more

“…Conventional nano- and microimpact tests subject samples to sets of repeated high strain rate indentations by a typically sphero-conical probe at different applied loads from a constant accelerating distance while tracking probe depth. Since the inception of this testing modality, a variety of applications have been developed, including applications based on single-impact testing protocols . Unlike macroimpact tests, which assess impact response by post-test damage evaluations (e.g., crater volume), nano- and microimpact tests are generally geared for rapid, automated test batteries, which are evaluated using probe depth tracking alone .…”

Thin film response to high velocity impact is usually studied by laser-induced projectile impact testing, which uses laser ablation to fire microprojectiles with velocities ranging from 10 to 1000 m s –1 , and impact assessment of thin materials is of growing interest due to the inverse thickness dependence of impact resistance that occurs at very low thicknesses .…”

“…In coating systems where intermittent high strain rate contact occurs, such as interrupted high-performance machining operations, impact resistance can be critical to serviceability. In the works [27,28], the principles of operation of the technique for carrying out nano-, micro-and macroscale impact tests of coatings are considered. The peculiarities of the determination of wear resistance in the conditions of field tests for abrasion and shock-abrasive wear and the measurement of hardness using indentation are considered in the publications [29,30].…”

“…The use of cutting-edge nano structural hard coatings on tools and machine components can greatly extend their lifetime and reduce wear, according to a study published in the Journal of Coatings Technology and Research. The investigation came to the conclusion that there is huge potential for these coatings to be used in numerous industrial applications [26,27].…”
