Nano-drug co-delivery system of natural active ingredients and chemotherapy drugs for cancer treatment: a review

Abstract: Chemotherapy drugs have been used for a long time in the treatment of cancer, but serious side effects are caused by the inability of the drug to be solely delivered to the tumor when treating cancer with chemotherapy. Natural products have attracted more and more attention due to the antitumor effect in multiple ways, abundant resources and less side effects. Therefore, the combination of natural active ingredients and chemotherapy drugs may be an effective antitumor strategy, which can inhibit the growth of … Show more

“…Due to the antitumor effect, abundant resources, multiple ways of action and few side effects, natural active ingredients have attracted more and more attention. It has been reported nanodrug co‐delivery system can play a critical role in the application of natural active products combined with chemotherapy drugs (Li et al, 2022). Thus, Rg3 combined with chemotherapy drugs may be an effective anti‐tumor strategy in the future to suppress the growth of tumor and multidrug resistance, and to reduce side effects of chemotherapeutics.…”

“…Chemotherapy is the most commonly used treatment strategy in the clinical practice. Chemotherapeutics that are commonly used include doxorubicin (DOX), camptothecin (CPT), 5-FU, and curcumin (Cur), which are employed in the treatment of many cancers, including CRC [ 217 ]. However, chemotherapeutics have a number of limitations in their use, including rapid clearance after administration, non-specific distribution, and non-discriminatory damage to normal tissues [ 218 ].…”

“…Up to present, it has been indeed achieved in substantive progress for cancer treatment by either chemotherapy small-molecular drugs or nucleic drugs; nevertheless, this malignant disease was still obstinate to be eliminated. This predicament may be attributed from the molecular and structural complexity of tumor, which cancers were regarded as various genetic disorders involved in multiple cells signaling [11][12][13]. So, it is possible that a single therapeutic strategy is insufficient to halt the progression of most cancers.…”
