Abstract

The use of nano material additives in diesel engine fuels  Effects of nano material additives on fuels properties  Effects of nano material additives on combustion characteristics This study compiled the results of various researches performed on using nano materials additives in diesel engine fuels such as diesel, biodiesel, water emulsified fuels and various fuel blends. The most researches declare that the best way to reduce the emissions and also increase the engine performance is the use of nano material additives and water emulsified fuels. In this review, the effects of using different nano material additives in various diesel engine fuels on fuel properties and combustion characteristics are investigated. Figure 1. Improvement of brake specific fuel consumption by nano material additive (Mahendravarman et al, 2016) Purpose: This review study aims to investigate the effects of using different nano material additives in various diesel engine fuels on fuel properties and combustion characteristics. Theory and Methods: Effects on fuel properties and combustion characteristics are determined by evaluating together the results of studies in the literature that use nano materials as fuel additive. Results: Nano material additives improve cetane number and heating value of the fuels and this contributes to completion of combustion by increasing the combustion efficiency. Increases are also obtained in fuel properties such as density, viscosity and flash point temperature. Nano material additives contribute to increase of burning speed and combustion efficiency by shortening ignition delay duration. As a result of this, decreases or increases occur in the maximum cylinder pressure and heat release rate. Conclusion: Nano material additives provide an advantage in the storage and transport of fuel by increasing the flash point temperature. They also contribute to first movement of the engine in cold weather by reducing pour and cloud point temperatures. Nano material additives serve as a good catalyst for combustion improvement due to increased surface area/volume ratio, increased radiation/mass transfer properties and better ignition properties. Nano materials addition to emulsion fuels causes micro-explosions during combustion to form secondary atomization, thereby increase in engine performance and reduction in engine emissions because of increasing combustion efficiency. Nano material additives provide lower HC and PM emissions by burning carbon deposits in the combustion chamber due to high activation energies.
