Nanocarriers in Veterinary Medicine: A Challenge for Improving Osteosarcoma Conventional Treatments

Abstract: In recent years, several nanocarrier-based drug delivery systems, such as polymeric nanoparticles, solid lipid nanoparticles, metallic nanoparticles, liposomes, and others, have been explored to target and treat a wide variety of diseases. Their employment has brought many benefits, not only to human medicine but also to veterinary medicine, albeit at a slower rate. Soon, the use of nanocarriers could revolutionize the animal health sector, and many veterinary therapies will be more effective as a result. The … Show more

“…Nanotechnology is an increasingly growing field of the 21st century with a broad range of applications in industry, engineering, electronics, environment, food, medicine, and consumer products [ 68 , 69 ]. By providing new tools and materials at the nanoscale level that are beneficial for public health [ 4 ], nanotechnology has enabled the development of novel treatment options.…”

“…Nanopharmaceuticals involve loading active pharmaceutical ingredients into nanocarriers in order to improve the solubility and bioavailability of the former, to extend their half-life, to enhance the pharmacokinetic properties, to modify the release profile, to reduce acute and chronic toxicity, and to achieve site-specific targeting [ 92 ]. In veterinary medicine, the nanoformulation approaches encompass all the different delivery systems shown in Figure 4 and enable the targeted delivery of antitumor drugs to reduce or avoid the side effects of conventional chemotherapy [ 93 ]. On one hand, nanoparticle-based drugs overcome several limitations associated with conventional diagnostic and therapeutic protocols in veterinary oncology owing to their intrinsic size-related properties, favorable pharmacokinetics, tumor-targeting properties, and consequent superior efficacy and toxicity profiles [ 94 ].…”

“…Su empleo ha traído muchos beneficios, no solo a la medicina humana sino también a la medicina veterinaria, aunque a un ritmo más lento. Pronto, el uso de nanotransportadores podría revolucionar el sector de la salud animal y, como resultado, muchas terapias veterinarias serán más efectivas (Sapino et al, 2022).…”
