Nanocomposites Based on Antiferroelectric Liquid Crystal (S)-MHPOBC Doping with Au Nanoparticles

Abstract: Modification of the physical properties of the (S)-MHPOBC antiferroelectric liquid crystal (AFLC) by doping with low concentrations of gold nanoparticles is presented for the first time. We used several complementary experimental methods to determine the effect of Au nanoparticles on AFLC in the metal–organic composites. It was found that the dopant inhibits the matrix crystallization process and modifies the phase transitions temperatures and switching time, as well as increases the helical pitch and spontane… Show more

“…12,13 Various groups of researchers are modulating AFLC materials by synthesising new compounds and/or blending multi-component novel mixtures to resolve the above issues. [14][15][16] With progressive changes in respect of liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and their applications, a novel group of materials having high dielectric anisotropy, birefringence, and small rotational viscosity is needed. This reduces the driving voltage, lowers energy consumption, and shortens the response time of the liquid crystal (LC) molecules considering the external field for achieving a faster display sequence.…”

“…reported hexanethiol-capped Silver nanoparticles dispersed in 4′-(Octyloxy)-4biphenylcarbonitrile (a nematic liquid crystal) exhibiting Ag NPs-assisted induced charge transfer by the composite [8]. A good number of works on nanocomposites of Au NP doped mesogen have been reported [9,10,11,12] with efficient enhancement of the material property of the composite. However, as dopant, Metal oxides get major attentions for their capability to adopt different structural geometries that can exhibit interesting metallic, semiconducting or insulating character [13,14].…”
