The protein from black soldier fly larvae was used as a functional ingredient of a new fiber composite for wound scaffolding. Larvae protein powder (LP) was blended with biodegradable poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and processed in an electrospinning machine using a coaxial feeding/mixing method to produce nanofibers approximately 100–350 nm in diameter. To improve the dispersion and interface bonding of various PCL/LP nanofiber components, a homemade compatibilizer, maleic anhydride-grafted poly(ε-caprolactone) (MPCL), was added to form MPCL/LP nanofibers. The structure, morphology, mechanical properties, water absorption, biocompatibility, wound healing, and biodegradability of PCL/LP and MPCL/LP nanofiber mats were investigated. The results showed enhanced adhesion in the MPCL/LP nanofiber mats compared to PCL/LP nanofiber mats; additionally, the MPCL/LP nanofibers exhibited better tensile strength at break of 0.7–2.2 and a Young's modulus of 9.0–22.8 MPa. Decomposition tests using a simulated body fluid revealed that the addition of LP enhanced the decomposition rate of both PCL/LP and MPCL/LP nanofiber mats and in vitro protein release. Cell proliferation and migration analysis indicated that PCL, MPCL, and their composites were biocompatible for fibroblast (FB) growth. Cell-cycle assays conducted by FBs on PCL/LP and MPCL/LP nanofiber samples showed normal cell growth distribution and biodegradability in a 30-day soil test. When the LP content was 20 wt.%, the degradation rate exceeded 50%. This suggests the potential of these materials as a new scaffold material and as a novel green nanofiber for environmental pollution reduction.

Tissue engineering (TE) has attracted the widespread attention of the research community as a method of producing patient-specific tissue constructs for the repair and replacement of injured tissues. To date, different types of scaffold materials have been developed for various tissues and organs. The choice of scaffold material should take into consideration whether the mechanical properties, biodegradability, biocompatibility, and bioresorbability meet the physiological properties of the tissues. Owing to their broad range of physico-chemical properties, inorganic materials can induce a series of biological responses as scaffold fillers, which render them a good alternative to scaffold materials for tissue engineering (TE). While it is of worth to further explore mechanistic insight into the use of inorganic nanomaterials for tissue repair, in this review, we mainly focused on the utilization forms and strategies for fabricating electrospun membranes containing inorganic components based on electrospinning technology. A particular emphasis has been placed on the biological advantages of incorporating inorganic materials along with organic materials as scaffold constituents for tissue repair. As well as widely exploited natural and synthetic polymers, inorganic nanomaterials offer an enticing platform to further modulate the properties of composite scaffolds, which may help further broaden the application prospect of scaffolds for TE.

Recycled beef bones (BBs) and crab shells (CSs) were processed into natural derivatives. Through innovative design, these natural derivatives were then combined with biopolymers to create a type of ecofriendly filament suitable for three-dimensional (3D) printing of scaffolds for bone regeneration. The BBs and CSs were thermally processed to produce BB-derived hydroxyapatite (HA) and CS-derived calcium hydroxide (TCS), respectively. Maleic anhydride-modified poly(butylene succinate) (MPBS), HA, and TCS were combined and fabricated into composite filaments, which were then transformed into scaffolds using 3D printing technology. The structure and antibacterial behavior of the obtained composite scaffolds were studied. Alone, PBS showed no bacterial inhibition. A mixture of HA and TCS (THA) was added to MPBS to form a MPBS/THA composite material, which significantly improved the functional properties of cell proliferation and antibacterial effect. The calcium hydroxide content of TCS was responsible for the antibacterial effect. The MPBS/THA composites were porous and displayed enhanced osteoblast proliferation in vitro. The surfaces of the various PBS/HA and MPBS/THA composites showed elevated levels of calcium and phosphorus compounds when exposed to simulated body fluids. Calcium and phosphate ions were rapidly deposited on PBS/HA and MPBS/THA composite scaffolds in osteoblasts according to the cell mineralization assay. Our findings indicate great potential for PBS/HA and MPBS/THA composite scaffolds in bone tissue engineering applications.
