This review describes methods and results of studying the mechanical properties of wood at all scales: from nano- to macro-scale. The connection between the mechanical properties of material and its structure at all these levels is explored. It is shown that the existing size effects in the mechanical properties of wood, in a range of the characteristic sizes of the structure of about six orders of magnitude, correspond to the empirical Hall-Petch relation. This “law” was revealed more than 60 years ago in metals and alloys and later in other materials. The nature, as well as the particular type of the size dependences in different classes of materials can vary, but the general trend, “the smaller the stronger”, remains true both for wood and for other cellulose-containing materials. The possible mechanisms of the size effects in wood are being discussed. The correlations between the mechanical and thermophysical properties of wood are described. Several examples are used to demonstrate the possibility to forecast the macromechanical properties of wood by means of contactless thermographic express methods based on measuring temperature diffusivity. The research technique for dendrochronological and dendroclimatological studies by means of the analysis of microhardness and Young’s modulus radial dependences in annual growth rings is described.

In this paper, the achievements, problems and prospects of creating personalized energy systems based on nanostructured materials are analysed. Various concepts of developing methods and ways of personalized energy provision for autonomous human survival in remote natural habitat, emergency situations of natural disasters and technogenic catastrophes when centralized power supply is unavailable or in an effort to reduce the economic and environmental costs of remote energy production and transportation are also considered. The possibilities and limitations of using traditional and renewable alternative energy sources, processes and devices for extracting, storing and converting their energy into the necessary consumer forms due to fundamental physical laws are discussed as well. The article covers the new nanostructured materials with special functional properties for personalized energy systems development. The mechanisms for formation of the required nanostructures in synthesized materials, especially those with a high content of fractal interfacial formations, are considered as well as methods for studying their structural and phase characteristics that determine the achievability of the specified parameters of model converters and energy storage devices.

High‐Temperature Hardness Anomaly in Ti–Ni–Fe‐Based Multiphase Intermetallic

The room temperature (RT) and high‐temperature (373–573 K) hardness of individual phases of Ti45Ni50Fe5 multiphase intermetallic are evaluated using nanoindentation. The B2 matrix exhibits anomalous behavior whose hardness decreases from RT to 373 K followed by an increase up to 573 K. In contrast, the hardness of the DO24 phase continuously reduces up to 473 K. Molecular dynamics simulation of single crystal compression of B2 matrix shows the presence of screw partial dislocations at all temperatures whose density increases up to 473 K followed by a decrease at 573 K. It is anticipated that individual screw super partial cross‐slips from {110} to {211} plane at the higher temperature, with their core becoming nonplanar. The nonplanar core of these screw partials acts as a dragging point for the motion of dislocation leading to hardness anomaly vis‐à‐vis yield strength anomaly. The DO24 phase does not exhibit any anomalous behavior in hardness in the studied temperature range due to the presence of super partial dislocations bounded by super intrinsic stacking faults instead of antiphase boundaries.
