Nanomechanical Properties of Silica-Coated Multiwall Carbon NanotubesPoly(methyl methacrylate) Composites

Abstract: The mechanical properties of polymer composites, reinforced with silica-coated multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs), have been studied using the nanoindentation technique. The hardness and the Young's modulus have been found to increase strongly with the increasing content of these nanotubes in the polymer matrix. Similar experiments conducted on thin films containing MWNTs, but without a silica shell, revealed that the presence of these nanotubes does not affect the nanomechanical properties of the composites. … Show more

“…Hardness varies from 0.15 to 1.19 GPa and from 0.5 to 2.12 GPa, respectively. Probably, the broad ranges come from a network of rods that are very rigid in tension but flexible in bending, [131] and are probed at the same length scale as the network features.…”

“…[27][28][29][30] The modi¯cation of MWCNTs with a layer of mesoporous silica shell will not only eliminate undesirable attractive interactions between the nanotubes, but also improve interfacial bonding ability. 31 In addition, compared with traditional mesoporous silica, mesoporous silica modi¯ed MWCNTs would possess advantages including quicker mass transfer and more amounts of functionalized groups introduced into the mesoporous structure due to the mesoporous layer. 32 Generally, particle size of commercial SPE¯ller is in the micrometer.…”
